Galeries Lafayette is one of the few department stores where shopping is, if not secondary, just part of the equation. Don’t believe us? This guided walking tour, hosted by Cultival Tours, should sway your thinking. Tracing Galeries Lafayette Haussmann through war, economic flourishes (and flops), the opulent Roaring Twenties and many, many facelifts, this experience gives an entirely unique perspective on the grand 19th-century venue. You’ll come away with great shots of the building’s design gems and interesting tales about the people who brought them to life. Bring your credit card, this is one department store where you’ll want to linger.
About your guide
Culture experienced differently: this is Cultival Tours’ thing, and boy do they do it well. Over the past 14 years, Cultival guides have got behind-the-scenes tours down to a fine art, telling the stories you don’t hear about Paris’ iconic sites.
Here’s the plan…
Meet your guide at Galeries Lafayette. From there, they’ll walk you through the aisles of the luxury French department store. An architectural treasure trove, your guide will explain the history of Galeries Lafayette, and point out the design features – from blink-and-you’ll-miss-it details to the statement hallmarks – and their intriguing backstories. See genuine designs from the Haussman, Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements and revel in the drugstore spirit of the 1960s that is still felt in the building’s design today. Your guide lifts the lid on the striking dome, a sight well worth craning your neck for.
Take the private staff elevators to the rooftop terrace, where impressive views of the cityscape come without the crowds. Your tour continues around the outside of the dome, and finally finishes up back on the 1st floor, alongside the vestige of the famed Majorelle staircase. After that, you’re on your own. In this huge (70,000 m2) fashion flagship store, we’re sure you’ll find a way to amuse yourself.
